There is some validity to each position. Differences in brain scan imaging have been demonstrated in some children who have been labeled with ADHD, suggesting a biological or genetic etiology. Some children given the label of ADHD are more active than others, disruptive even, but their symptoms resolve in a more accepting environment. The behaviors seen in children with ADHD can also be seen in some children with stressful life experiences, such as parental abuse, neglect, alcohol use, and divorce. These behaviors improve when children begin to cope effectively with these situations, either because life changes or because psychotherapy helps them learn productive ways of managing their bottled-up feelings.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event in which severe physical harm occurred or in which the person was threatened. According to DSM-IV the diagnosis of PTSD is based on an extreme response to an extremely threatening and stressful event (e.g. natural disasters, wars, actual or threatened injuries, violent personal assaults). As a reaction to the traumatic event, the person develops an intense feeling of fear, horror and helplessness. The person may suffer from repeated involuntary re-experiences of some aspects of the situation in the form of flashback episodes or dreams. These re-traumatizations may occur spontaneously or subtle cues linked to the event may trigger them. There is no simple explanation for drug addiction. It is a disorder formed by the confluence of many factors. The necessary event, the one that absolutely must occur, is the repeated exposure of the brain to drugs that activate the brain reward system. And, although the repeated exposure to addictive drugs is necessary for addiction to occur, it is not sufficient to cause addiction by itself. Addictive drugs have to be taken within a specific motivational context. That is, they have to be taken purposefully to produce pleasure or to reduce stress, discomfort, and anxiety. They have to be taken to get high. Somehow, this combination of drug and behavior allows drugs to change the brain, so that it begins to behave as if getting drugs were as important as getting food or drink. The addicted brain treats drug-taking as a survival function.

Ever since I was born I have been surrounded by cannabis. My father has always smoked. Which is fortunate, because he was a bit of an aggressive person and a nice fat spliff always calmed him down.
