Worker Repaid for Leaf of Absence

A Toronto labor arbitrator has ruled that Air Canada must rehire with back wages a man the company fired following his pot conviction. Air Canada said that the mail, identified only as Mr. Poole, was discharged for an unsatisfactory attendance record and "the potential hazard that involvement with drugs could have on other employees, customers -and company property and equip me 11

Poole, an aircraft, mechanic, countered that he was unjustly discharged, since he only indulged in grass-smoking when off duty. The arbitrator said the evidence showed (hat Poole was able to perform his duties and that his absences did not stem from marijuana use.
