Format of this Document

The procedures detailed in this document are a mixture of mandatory and optional steps. The core document describes the basic procedure in its simplest form and at various points there will be possible adaptations that can be incorporated. In general, the adaptations will summarize what is required and the benefit to the cultivator in the event the adaptation is implemented. You should read the entire document before you attempt to implement the procedures described in it. The first time you...

A Substrate Preparation Make Holes in the Canning Lids

Take the lids from the pint jars and use the drill or hammer and nail to poke holes in them. One centered hole per lid is sufficient, however some people prefer to use 2 or 4 holes around the rim, so they can inoculate the cake in more than one spot. This has the advantage of faster colonization of the cake, since growth starts in several places. The disadvantage is that every time the syringe needle goes into the cake, there is a slight chance for contamination. Most guides suggest using 4...

Advantage

There are two advantages to doing this. First, you use significantly less inoculate. Generally it is not worth while for this reason. The inoculate is not very expensive if you purchase spore syringes. It is virtually free if you prepare your own spore syringes. The main reason why this is sometimes worth while has to do with contamination. By far, the most likely spot for contamination to enter the culture jar is at the site of the inoculation. If you have a spore syringe that may not be...

Caps Used for Spores

If you are going to use a cake to generate spores, you can insure that the caps stay free of contaminates. When you birth the cake from the culture jar, set it on a clean wash cloth in the terrarium. Place a large glass jar over it and seal it to the wash cloth. A large peanut butter jar is usually perfect. You need to have enough room inside the jar for the mushroom to grow to maturity. Humidity will be able to leach through the wash cloth and surround the cake, but air currents will not be...

Checking out the Ultra Sonic Humidifier Setup

Fill the humidifier with water and position the various stages of the coke bottles between the humidifier and terrarium. At no place should the vinyl tubing have a low spot for condensation to form and plug up the line. Condensation will form in the lines but it should run to the end and drip harmlessly out of the line. Set the humidity level at the minimum setting. This is still more than you should need. Adaptation-19 After you give it time to stabilize, you should see that each stage of the...

Colander

For draining water out of the perlite. Suitable substitutes include a piece of screen or cloth, or anything that will hold perlite but let water drain out. Perlite is puffed volcanic glass. When you work with perlite, it tends to be dusty, creating a cloud of glass dust that can be harmful to the lungs, especially if you are asthmatic. Disposable dust masks can be found in hardware stores, often in the Paint section. They are very inexpensive. They can also be used to prevent breathing our germ...

Control jar technique

After the jars are steam sterilized, let them cool, tighten the lids and let them sit uninoculated for several days. Watch for any colored growths or changes in the appearance of the substrate. The tell tale rancid odor of bacteria can be easily detected by loosening the jar lid and checking for the odor. If there is contamination at this stage, the sterilization technique needs to be checked. Most likely it will be a to short sterilization time. If there is a problem at this stage, lengthen...

Disadvantages

There are several disadvantages to using bigger cakes. First, it takes several weeks longer for the fungus to colonize the entire cake. Another disadvantage is that if you suffer from contamination, you will be throwing out more substrate material. Lastly, you need to make sure when you construct your terrarium that you leave a few more inches of space under the drip shield for the cakes to reside. Since they are taller, they will require the drip shield to be placed higher. You may notice...

Dosage

The standard dose of psilocybin or psilocin for a 150 lb person is a 6-20 mg dose. We will figure the average dose as 10 mg. The crude alkaloid extraction process given here yields a brownish crystalline powder that is at least 25 percent pure. Each mason jar should contain at least 50 grams of wet mycelium. After drying this would be about 5 grams of material. The crude material extracted from this should contain 25-30 mg of psilocybin psilocin or roughly 2-3 hits. This yield may very to some...

Equipment

Most of the equipment described in this guide is readily available at reasonable prices. One quart size mason jars can be purchased from many stores including Sears for about 2.98 a dozen. If a large scale Psilocybin farm is being set up, a greater number of jars could be obtained from a Wholesale outlet or bought at a discount from the retailer. Pipettes, inoculating loops, petri dishes, agar, and other materials (including pre-mixed media) are found at many scientific supply houses or can be...

Heating

The main rule is to not heat the dual chambered terrarium. Any direct heating works against the humidification and adds a drying influence. Do not use heating cables, heat pads or blankets. Don't shine light directly down into the terrarium. Keep any plant grow light (low wattage only) a safe distance from the terrarium. These fungi grow well at 60 degrees Fahrenheit. PF has even seen them growing perfectly at temperatures cooler than 60 degrees. They grow slowly when they are cool. When warm...

How to Make a Spore Syringe

If your spore print is contaminated or you introduce contamination into the spore syringe, you will have difficulty later in the process. Ideally, there should be no fans blowing or drafts of air. You should clean the area where you will be working carefully and make sure that everything is tidy. 10 cc. syringe with long needle Where to find X-Acto knife or sharp steak knife Several things need to be accomplished. First, we need to sterilize a shot glass to easily mix the...

Incubation Of Inoculated Jars

After inoculation of the jars, tighten the lid bands and retape the needle holes. Place the jars in a safe place out of direct sunlight. Indirect light is all that is required. If the temperature is kept around 70 degrees, germination will begin within 3 to 5 days. Germinating spores appear as small white fuzzy spots, quickly growing and spreading with cottony white growth and strandy rhizomorphs. Any room temperature is O.K. If it gets cold indoors, over head light shinning down on the tops of...

Incubator A

The inoculated jars develop fastest if they are stored at a temperature of 27 C (80 F) (According to Stamets the best incubation temperature for P. cubensis would be 86 F, but since the jars themselves are a few degrees warmer than the surroundings (mycelium emits heat when growing) 80 F is a good and safe incubator temperature) You can build an effective incubator by using two plastic boxes of the same size and an aquarium heater. There are several types of aquarium heaters. When you're buying...

Inoculation A

After the cooker is cold to the touch take the jars out and place them on a clean surface, have an alcohol lamp or a lighter and the spore syringe ready. Shake the spore syringe to break up the spore clumps. To be able to shake it it's necessary that there is a small bubble of air in the syringe. If this is not the case, then you can suck approximately 1cc of sterile air into the syringe by placing the tip of the needle into the flame and slowly pulling the plunger back. Loosen the foil from all...

Inoculation Cleanliness Simplified

Begin carefully inoculating them with the syringe. It's a good idea to have a lighter handy as well to sterilize the needle as you go. Flame the needle until it gets very hot, then carefully squirt a little bit of spore solution (if you can spare it) to cool down the needle before sticking it in the cake. Putting a hot needle into the cake will get burnt-on rice flour all over the needle.

Inoculation Of Pf Jars Without The Lids

This technique can also be used if canning jars are not available (1 2 pint wide mouth canning jars are perfect and should be used at all cost). If regular drinking glasses are to be used - use regular tapered sided drinking glasses (8 ounce - 250ml) Jars can be inoculated without using a lid with holes punched. Before trying this technique, inoculate with the punched lid first. That will show how it works without any problems (almost fail proof). The only precaution to observe is to disturb...

Jk

Sterilize them and allow to cool. To break the mycelium up while in the syringe, Draw air through the needle while flaming it. Then give the syringe a shake for 2 minutes. Then inoculate the jars with the syringe that was made. There you have it. Colonization should complete in about one to two weeks. Now the jar you injected the Karo into doesn't ever need to be birthed. It could be taped and put into the refrigerator to be re-used. You'll never need another...

Making A Spore Syringe

Sterile syringe with water for injecting water into the spore print jar. 3. Sterile syringe for loading spore solution out of the jar. 4. A small Pyrex glass stirring rod (science - lab supply). 5. Alcohol, tequila shot glass and eye dropper. 6. Lid with two holes. Prepare this lid by drilling a hole in the center of the lid to fit the Pyrex glass stirring rod. Punch the second hole near the edge of the lid (rubberized edge up) to fit a syringe needle.

Mix Up the Substrate

Using the appropriate quantities as outlined in the table below, mix the vermiculite and brown rice flour together in the mixing bowl, using the large spoon. Add the water and mix thoroughly. This will take some patience and will probably wear out your arm a bit. If you are concerned about the purity of the tap water in your area, you may want to used bottled water rather than tap water. In most cases, though, tap water is fine. The recipe below often comes out just a bit more than what you...

Nongermination Of Spores

The spore solution was not inoculated deep enough down into the jar. Instead of running down the side of the jar and inoculating the substrate cake, the solution was absorbed by the non-nutritive top vermiculite layer. To avoid this from happening, make sure that the spore solution flows down along the sides of the substrate cake by inserting the syringe needle so that the tip is below the non-nutritive upper vermiculite layer. 2. The substrate jars were not allowed to cool down after...

Parameters For Optimal Growth

(adhere to these as much as you feel comfortable with. Satisfactory results can be had by keeping the jars on a closet shelf from start to finish. But trying to follow these guide-lines will certainly lead to better crop yields. Substrate 84-86 F (Thermal death at 106 F) 5000-10000 ppm Fresh Air Exchanges 0 per hour. (but remember this air MUST be free of Diffuse natural or exposure for 12-16 hours day of grow-lux type fluorescent high in blue spectra at the 480 nanometer wavelength. (Regular...

Poor Mans

The Poor Man's Pod is a fruiting chamber for cakes with the benefit of automatic airation and humidifucation. Put two airstones in a rubbermade size of your choosing. Hook up your hoses and put in the geolite (3 1 2 inches deep). I ran them through the side. I added water till it was an inch from the top. Plug in hoses The geolite you will want to buy at a local hydroponics store because it will cost a lot to ship that stuff. Most of the other stuff can be found at local hardware stores or...

Poor Mans Terrarium

2 liter plastic coke bottle This terrarium is made by cutting a section out of a 2 liter coke bottle. This serves two purposes. First, it allows you to put a fully colonized rice cake inside the bottle. The second purpose is it allows the volume of the bottle to be reduced to the point where the moistness of the rice cake can keep it humid. Remove a section of the bottle using the razor knife. The cut on the lower part of the bottle is not very critical. The top cut is more difficult to do...

Preparation Of Media

PDA (Potato Dextrose Yeast Agar) Wash 250 grams of unpeeled potatoes and slice them 1 8 inch thick. Wash these several times in cool tap water until the water is clear. Drain the slices in a collander and rinse once with distilled water. Cook the potato slices in distilled water until tender. Strain the cooking liquids through a flannel cloth or several layers of cheesecloth and collect the liquid in a flask. Rinse the boiled potatoes several times with distilled water, add these rinse waters...

Prepare the Terranium

If you can, Cut 2 holes toward the bottom of your Rubbermaid tub(The terranium) to allow CO2 to escape. At least 1 square. Wipe the inside with rubbing alcohol. Now you need to add a 1 layer of Perlite to the bottom of your rubbermaid tub. Fill it with Drinking water to slightly less of the top of the perlite. Add a little Hydrogen Peroxide. Cover Casing with a plastic saran wrap. Place casing into terrarium. Keep dark for 2-3 days. After about 2-3 days of darkness, you will see white Mycelium...

Pressure Cooker or Pressure Canner

Make absolutely sure that you know how to use it, and that all seals, valves, and safety plugs are in working order. For most people this is the most difficult item to obtain. New pressure cookers start at about 30-60.00 each, and new pressure canners start at about 250-300.00 each. Pressure canners are much easier to use and hold many more jars, but can be difficult to find. Both can be found at garage sales, thrift stores, etc. Most people who are into canning will have...

Rice Flour

This idea is from AN165023 anon.penet.fi Rather than use brown rice flour available at a health food store, you can grind your own from long grain brown rice. Simply put the dried rice into a coffee grinder or a blender and let it chew the rice into a chunky flour. You will need to increase the water from 1 4 cup per 1 2 pint jar by 1 and 1 2 tablespoons. The chunky home ground flour absorbs a little more water than the normal flour.

Steam [Semi Sterilization

Since a pressure cooker can often be difficult to obtain, a common substitute used is simply boiling the jars in a pot of steaming water. The pot is filled until the water is about an inch up the side of the jars, and then a lid is put on the pot to hold the steam in. Boil for at least an hour. This method works to some degree, and I have heard of people having a 100 success rate using it. More common, however, is that some jars will get contaminated with bacteria, since many bacteria can...

Step 1 Buy Supplies

Long Grain Brown Rice (Blender Required) Or Brown Rice Flour BRF (No Blender Needed). Organic If Possible Pint Wide Mouth or Tapered Mason Jars. (250 Ml for the foreigners) Spore Syringe (or a print if your bold enough. You will need a sterilized syringe as well.) 4 deep Tray that fit's inside your Tub 2 Gallons of Drinking Water. Honey, No preservatives.(Dextrose is better, but semi-difficult to find) Baking Soda (Optional for Cleaning) Large Pot Or Pressure Cooker. Painters Grade Masking...

Step 12 Printing

Take the shrooms that have fully opened, and cut the stem off as close to the cap as you possibly can with a sterilized razor blade. Try not to damage the gills of the mushroom. Place a piece of foil (3x5 Card works too)big enough to fold in 2 and still be slightly bigger than the mushroom to be printed in a zip lock bag , and place the mushroom gill's down in the centerr of the foil so that if you fold the foil in half, the mushroom will ben in the very center. leave the bag open just a little...

Step 13 Washing

Some people like to wash their mushrooms after they dry by wiping the dirt off with a toothbrush. This helps prevent them from bruising. (Phewlish taught me that one). If you want to wash the dirt off now, you can slowly run some warm-cool water in the faucet. Run the cap under, wipe your thumb over the cap, gently work your way down the stem to the base, and loosen any dirt with your fingernails. Do not submerge them in water. put them on a paper towel to dry while you was the other one's. Pat...

Step 5 Inoculate Jars

Now that your jars have fully cooled, you are ready to inject Spores into them. Start by shaking your syringe for 2 minutes. Until your arm gives out. If you made the syringe yourself, let it sit for 24 hours to re-hydrate the spores. Figure out how many holes you are going to inoculate. 11jars x 4 holes per 44 holes. Plus the 1 honey water jar counts as 4 holes. so 12 cc's divided by 48 holes. About 1 4 cc per hole. If your doing less jars, do your own math. *Note* You might think that...

Step 6 Incubate Jars

Put your jars in a dark place for 2 weeks. try to keep them at a temperature of 85 F. They can be stored at room temperature (72-78 F) but this will slow the process down. Do not let them get above 95 . After a few days you should see white fuzz Mycelium growing where you inoculated it. Try to keep these out of light when you check them. If you see any color other than white (or a pale yellow from too much moisture) dump the jar into the trash can and clean your jar with...

Step 7 Prepare Casing Soil

After your jars have been Fully colonized, begin preparing your casing mix. Boil some water on the stove using a lid. Clean all the sticks out of your peat moss. Put a few cups of Peat Moss in a cake pan and bake for 20 minutes at 300 F. Do the same with 2x the amount of Vermiculite.Turn the oven off and let cool 30 minutes in the oven. As you turn the oven off, remove the water from the heat source. Get a large ziplock bag and add 4 cups Peat Moss, and 4 Cups Vermiculite. Zip the bag shut and...

Step 9 Case

Spray some rubbing alchol into the air above you prior to doing any work. Put some rubber gloves on, and spray them with alchol. Let them air dry. The casing tray should be not be in the Terranium when you are doing this. Do this over a tray or plastic trash bag. Their will be dirt. Put a V2 layer of Vermiculite into your casing tray. The casing tray should be able to hold water, with no holes in the bottom. You may try lineing the tray with foil if light is able to penetrate the sides. Once...

Sterilization

All utensils used in the cultivation of mycelia must be sterilized by heat before use. Glassware must be boiled in water for 30 minutes. Metalware used repeatedly must be held in a flame until glowing and then allowed a moment to cool before making contact with any cultures or specimens. When the inoculation loop has been used to transfer a fragment of mycelium it must be flame sterilized again before touching the next fragment. All medium containers must be sterilized after the medium has been...

Sterilizing the Jars

Place the finished jars in your pressure cooker or pressure canner, and cook them at 15psi for 45-60 minutes, according to the instructions for your pressure cooker canner. Let the entire apparatus cool completely. Do not try to open the pressure cooker before it is cool to the touch, and do not try to speed the cooling process, as a quick change in temperature could crack the jars. Be sure to let the jars cool for several hours, because heat is often trapped in the center of the cake, even if...

The Inner reservoir tek

The cakes are regular 1 2 pint low form canning jar size. The shrooms are the Mazatec, Treasure Coast (see below) and PF Classic spore races from PF. To do this is extremely easy. Everything is done standard PF TEK and when the substrate is loaded into the jar, use the end of a pen (a sharpie ink pen is perfect) and insert it into the middle of the substrate and make a hole all the way to the bottom. Any rod no more than 1 2 inch around is good for making the hole. A proper sized wooden dowel...

The Rich Mans Terrarium

This is the terrarium that was used in the perlite and terrarium tests. I found it at a new and used resteraunt supply store in Seattle for 25. This is a covered food display tray. It works great with perlite (and without) and holds 9 half pint cakes. The one above has 7 cakes. The cakes are post initial flush and the fruitings are secondary fruitings. The fruitbodies that appear late are always superb in form. If you can't find one of these in your local town, you can order one for around 75...

To the Terrarium

A humidity gauge can be added to the terrarium. Especially for Styrofoam coolers, it is easy to cut out a window in the side of the cooler and insert a combination humidity temperature gauge. The gauge should be put below the drip shield so that it is showing the actual conditions where the mushrooms are growing. In reality, the conditions will not vary much inside the terrarium, but there is no reason to add inaccuracy. The gauge can be glued in place with silicon glue. Make sure the vents in...

Psilocybin And The

The present drug laws are a pathetic mess. The old adage that ignorance of the law is no excuse becomes a ludicrous statement when the laws themselves are rooted in ignorance. One classical example of this is the classification of the stimulant Cocaine as a narcotic. One is reminded of the King in Alice in Wonderland who made up his own language as he went along with total disregard for the accepted definitions of words. I will not even go into the question of whether any law enforcement agency...

Combination of Spore Print and Preparation of Inoculant

This excellent idea is from AN165023 anon.penet.fi If it is your intent to use a mushroom to immediately generate inoculant for a successive crop, you can eliminate some of the above steps and reduce the risk of contamination. Poke a small nail hole in the cap of a wide mouth jar. Cover the nail hole with a piece of electrical tape. A 1 2 pint canning jar similar to that used for the cultures is fine. Sterilize both the jar and the lid. Place the harvested cap in the sterilized, wide mouth jar....

Providing Feed Back and Getting

The proceedure used in this document drastically simplifies the process, but even so, you may find yourself in a situation where you need help. There are a lot of people that know about growing mushrooms in the alt.drugs.psychedelics and rec.drugs.psychedelic newsgroups. If you need help, you can almost always get solid advice there. If you have a suggestion, you can get it to the author of this document by posting it to these same newsgroups. If you have...

Procedure

Wash the jars with antibacterial soap. Use a dishwasher too if you have it. It is not necessary to get real sterile just yet, just be neat. 2. To 3 canning jars add 100ml rye and 175ml distilled water. Close the jar with the lid upside-down. The lids will remain upside down throughout their use. Keep the dome loose but secure. 3. In a clean container mix some soil with distilled water until it is spongy to the touch and does not leek any water. The soil should be wet but not liquidy. You want...

A few little things we will need

Wide mouth quart jar and normal dome lid with ring as used in PF jars. 2. Piece of 2 wide PVC pipe any length 2 or over will do. OK, let's get started. First off our mini terrarium will be sitting upside down with the lid on tightly. To allow the cake to create a nice fruiting environment for itself we will allow airflow through four l 8 holes equally placed around the lid. The temperature must be held as near to 76 degrees as possible for the proper fruiting environment to be maintained. I...

Fruiting

Dysrhythmias For Alcoholics

The fruiting of the cakes can be accomplished in any sort of container that can be loosely sealed and has at least one translucent side, preferably on the top. Suitable containers are a plastic bucket, rubbermaid container, terrarium, aquarium Put an V2 inch layer of moistened perlite or expanded clay pelets or even a wet paper towel at the bottom of the container and birth the cakes onto this layer by letting them slide from the jar upside down. If you have a bigger fruiting chamber (a bigger...

Mycelial Growth

The first signs of mycelial growth should appear within 5-7 days. If none appear within two weeks, something went wrong. (Perhaps the cake was not cooled completely before inoculation, and the heat killed the spores, or the spores simply did not make it into the cake.) This type of mushroom mycelium will always be a brilliant white fuzz, often growing in ropy strands. This ropy type of growth is called rhizomorphic growth, and is a sign that the mycelium will probably fruit very well. Any other...

Pure Culture Technique

The most difficult part of psilocybin mushroom cultivation is the observance of the rules of pure culture technique. These are the sanitary code of mushroom cultivation. There are usually many varieties of bacteria and fungal spores in our environment floating in the air, clinging to our hands and clothing, issuing from our mouths with every exhalation. Extreme measures must therefore be taken to keep these out of our mycelial cultures, which they would rapidly overrun. The following points...

Drying

The best way to preserve mushrooms is to dry them as soon as possible after picking. It is very important when drying that the mushrooms never be exposed to heat. Psilocybin and Psilocin, the main active chemicals in Psilocybe mushrooms, are heat-sensitive chemicals that will break down if exposed to heat. You can get away with drying them in the sun, but expect some loss in potency. Another common method of drying is to put the mushrooms in an enclosed container, like a covered bowl, that also...

Overview Of Pf Techniques

Brown rice powder, vermiculite and distilled water are mixed and loaded into a 1 2 pint jar, which is steam sterilized. The jar is then inoculated by the spore syringe. 2. After the substrate cake in the jar colonizes and begins to show signs of fruiting, the cake is released from the jar and placed into the dual chambered terrarium to fruit. 3. A mature mushroom is decapitated and spore printed in a jar. 4. Spore syringes are prepared with the spore print jar to begin another life cycle. BASIC...

D Fruiting Producing Mushrooms and Harvesting The Fruiting Chamber Terrarium

Many different things can be used for a fruiting chamber, including camping coolers, aquariums, and large plastic containers (Rubbermaid brand or similar containers work great). The fruiting chamber must be at least 6-8 (15-20cm) tall, and have enough floor space for the cakes to be arranged with at least 1 (2.5cm) of free space on all sides. Spread the cakes out as much as possible so that the mushrooms have room to grow. If the chamber is much too tall or too large, it may be difficult to...

Deth Heads Birdseed

Before you start Realize that this method is not the best for a beginner to mushroom cultivation. If you are a beginner and would like to see the newbie way, go to Psylocybe Fanaticus's page. You can check out his tek and get spores from there (unless you only grow legal, edible mushrooms like I do ) ). Ideally, you should have a couple of harvests with the PF-tek before you go on to whole grains. It lets you learn about the life cycle of the mushrooms and is much more forgiving about sterility...

Drying and Preservation of the Mushrooms

Wire Mesh Used For Drugs

Once you have grown and harvested some mushrooms, you need to think about preserving them. They will only keep for a short time in their fresh state. Sometimes a single mushroom needs to be harvested and it isn't enough for a dose. Other times, too many mushrooms will be fully grown for a single dose. Either way, you will be in a situation where you want to preserve them for later. And, even if this didn't happen, you may find your self in a situation where you simply don't have the time or...

In a container, add a layer of Damp Rid, then have the screen suspend 1 4 somehow over the Damp Rid. Do this for 2 days. Weigh your shrooms, if they loose any weight over a 24 hour period, keep them for another 24 hour period. right, After they have been fanned for 24 hours, I used to put my shrooms in this thing. it's just a...

Data On Various Psiocybian Species

Found from May through September usualy in dense shade scattered among mosses, and in wet soil around bogs, swamps, and ditches in the northwestern USA and as far east as Michigan. Carpophores grow well in sphagnum moss having a range of pH 7-8. Found in early summer through late autumn scattered, grouped, or clustered on cow dung, or rich soil in Florida and other southern states. Spores germinate easily easily on all agar media. Optimum growth occurs on MEA at 80 degrees F. Carpophores can be...

Method 1 Hand Spraying

This is the original method that Psylocybe Fanaticus recommended for the home cultivator to grow mushrooms. It is the least expensive. It is the most labor intensive and forces you to conform to a demanding schedule. The only thing you need in addition to the basic growing chamber is a spray bottle that can put out a fine mist. The procedure is this At least four times a day the terrarium needs to have humidity injected into it via the spray bottle. At least twice a day the CO2 that has built...

Making A Spore Print

A spore print is a collection of spores on a flat surface. It can serve several purposes. It can be used to assist identification of the specimen by observing its color or if made on a glass slide, by studying the shapes of the spores under a microscope. Mycological identification keys include descriptions of spore prints and microscopic spore features for different species. Spore prints are also the standard method of collecting spores for later germination on agar media. A print from a single...

Pinning Fruiting and Harvesting

For the first week or two, the cakes will generally not do anything. Then, very small bumps, called pins, pinheads, or primordia will begin to grow out of the surface of the cake. These are the beginnings of mushrooms. Many will never grow any larger. However, some will grow until they are full-grown mushrooms. A mushroom is ready to be picked when the edge of the cap tears away from the stem (the stem of a mushroom is called the stipe). Often, there will be a thin veil between the cap and...

Aborts

Some of the pinheads will begin to grow, then suddenly stop before they become full-grown mushrooms. These are known as aborts (aborted mushrooms). Aborts are just as good for eating as full-grown mushrooms, but they must be picked before they begin to rot. A mushroom that has mold growing on it or which has black goo in the center of the stem is rotten and is not safe to eat. It is often difficult for beginners to identify an aborted mushroom before it begins to decompose. Early warning signs...

Time Scale Of The Mushrooms

Spore inoculation to spore germination - within a week, at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Spore germination to complete colonization of the cake - about 2 to 3 weeks. 3. Colonization to fruiting cycle start - within 2 weeks. 4. The fruiting cycle lasts about 2 weeks. After the initial flush, the mycelium cake begins to turn blue and no more mushrooms form. If the cake is thoroughly cleaned of abhorts and stray fungus blobs after the initial fruiting and given the PF double ended cake casing tek,...

The Growing Cycle

This section is relatively short considering its topic. That is because when you get to this point you are only needed to make sure the fungus has the right conditions to thrive. Once you place a fully colonized rice cake in the terrarium it just needs several things to grow mushrooms. It needs high humidity, temperatures below 85 degrees F. and a little light. Once the mycelium network has gained access to enough nutrients the cake can initiate mushrooms if conditions are right. The initiation...

Mushroom Pizza

Cook your favorite frozen pizza according to directions. Several minutes before the pizza is done cooking, add finely sliced fresh mushroom pieces to the pizza. Optionally, you can add some grated cheese on top of the newly added mushroom pieces. Adding cheese will help encapsulate the mushroom pieces and dramatically help mask the taste. Place pizza back in > Obviously, some of the people that grow these mushrooms are going to be looking for a 'mind melting' experience. Bad trips on...

Starting The Culture

Upon obtaining one or more specimens of a psilocybin bearing mushroom one can begin to cultivate as much of the hallucinogen as is desired. Any part of the fungus can be used for inoculation. If the spores are used, consideration must be given to the natural life cycle of the mushroom. A single cap contains millions of spores, and any one of these will germinate in the medium to form a mycelium. But this mycelium will consist of what is known as monokaryotic tissue. Such a mycelial organism...

Birthing the Cakes

Once a cake is completely covered in white mycelium, wait at least 1-2 more days before taking the cake out of the jar. When you are ready, and in a fairly clean room, begin transferring the cakes from their jars into their fruiting chamber (described in the next step). Remove the lid of each jar, and dump out the dry vermiculite on top. Then, put the lid back over the top of the jar. Slowly turn the jar upside down, so that the cake is resting on the jar lid. You may need to gently tap the jar...

The Canning Jar Lid loose or tight

There are two choices with the lids during incubation - tight or loose. With a very high moisture content (good for fruiting), a tight lid can cause water to collect in the bottom of the jar. This is to be avoided. If it happens, the lid should be kept on loose during incubation. Tape the canning jar lid to the band to make the lid act as a one piece lid for raising and lowering. If the substrate is on the dry side, a tight lid will preserve the moisture content. It is all a matter of the...

Method 2 Using a Fish Tank Bubblier

The basic portion of this system was originally pioneered by Psylocybe Fanaticus There are several improvements and adaptations in this section that were not included in the original method. The idea is to create humidity by bubbling air through water. A small fish tank air pump and bubbling stone are used to accomplish this. This method is inexpensive and allows the terrarium to exist without your constant attention. It's major limitation is that depending on how it is implemented, it can only...

How to Make a Spore Print

Once you have a mature mushroom, you are in a position to make a spore print and use it to continue cultivation of mushrooms. The cap should be harvested when the mushroom cap has become flat or is starting to invert. Sterility is key. Adaptation-25 Be careful not to do anything that will compromise the sterility of your spore print. The typical procedure is to cut the stalk off of a mature mushroom very close to the cap. A sterilized knife or razor blade is used to do this. The cap is then...

The Ultra Richmans Terrarium

This terrarium was made by a plastics fabrication expert. It isn't cheap (like a poor mans Whalmart plastic storage box) but if you can find the right person - the cost is a bit more than the richmans dome above. It is made out of acrylic clear plastic. It is one piece, with a removable spray shield. At the top, is a spray hole with a rubber stopper. It is designed to hold one fruiting cake to maturity, but it can hold 4 cakes tightly. The cake inside is a first flush PF spore race cake -...

Syringe preparation

Draw boiling water into a syringe and squirt it out several times. Refill the syringe with boiling water, replace the needle quard and wrap the syringe in tin foil. Prepare several syringes like this. Drop the syringes into the boiling water and boil them for one hour. Let them cool before using. The main point of this technique would be to expose the interior of the jar to as little room air as possible. Always protect the holes in the lid by placing tin foil or sterile...

Sources for a Spore Syringe

(Check all sources for current address before ordering) Currently the most cost effective place for a United States resident to order a spore syringe is from the company that pioneered many of the concepts in this document. They have a very fast turn around time and are very reliable. Their spore syringes are 10.00 (US) and that includes shipping. They are very high quality. They currently supply P. cubensis Matias Romero. This is a substrain of the Amazonian strain. If you are outside the...

Bulk Substrate Growing

This section is for the mycrophile that has some experience and desires to cultivate a large crop of mushrooms. This section is intended for someone that has already grown several crops using the PF Tek procedure detailed earlier in this document. This section assumes a certain amount of experience and expertise. Please do not attempt this technique without first gaining the experience you will most likely fail if you do so. The procedure detailed earlier in this document is the best one known...

What are common contaminants of the mushroom culture

Most specialty mushrooms are grown on sterilized substrates, and once a contaminant gets a foothold, it flourishes in the absence of competition from other contaminants. In nature, complex interactions among hundreds of other fungi, bacteria, nematodes, etc. maintain an ecological equilibrium. In a sterilized medium, the grower provides ideal conditions for the contaminant to prosper. In sawdust bags, contamination usually involves another fungus living off the waste products or on the remains...

Small Perlite Shroomariums by Bacchus

If you're using the PFTek formula (rice flour and vermiculite), instead of a using a large humidified aquarium, try making individual shroomariums. Each one is a gallon jar with 1 2 of wet perlite at the bottom. When the cake is ready to be birthed, it is placed in the jar on a plastic lid or something similar. This method may not yield quite as many or as large shrooms as a fancier, larger, more expensive setup, but it should be more than adequate for most appetites. This may still benefit...
