Hydroponics Nutrients

This is the most important part of your hydroponics set-up. Your mix and the choice of nutrients will depend on whether your plant will die, grow, grow big, or grow very very big. Nutrient solutions basically come in a number of different forms. It is vital to check that the solution you use is the best for your type of plant. Some solutions are for soil and can only be used with soil. They contain the wrong elements for hydroponics use. There are soil-based supplements fertilizers and then there are hydroponics nutrients. Most hydroponics nutrient solutions are complete nutrient solutions. They provide every element and compound needed for proper plant growth. Because of this hydroponics nutrients are a bit steep in price. Always spend your money on the correct nutrients because any short cuts will lead to failure and kill your plant.

Cleaning The Grow Room

It does happen that sometimes the bugs win. No matter how much you might spray them or try to kill them, they keep coming back to your grow room. To solve this you will have to create a clean room, which means a total and complete cull of your harvest. First set-up another grow room of smaller size enough to support some cuttings and clones. Take cuttings from what plants you have and move the cuttings to that room. You will use the cuttings again eventually in your clean grow room if you want to continue those strains. Back to the grow room. First start with the walls. Clean the walls down with bleach if you can. You will maybe have to paint them again after. Nutrient Solution Burn

There's a good chance that this leaf was subjected to nutrient solution burn. These symptoms are seen when the EC concentration of hydroponic solutions is too high. These symptoms also appear when strong nutrient solution is splashed onto the leaves under hot HID lamps, causing the leaves to burn under the solution. Many hydroponic gardeners see this problem. It's the beginning of nutrient burn. It indicates that the plants have all the nutrients they can possibly use, and there's a slight excess. Back off the concentration of the nutrient solution just a touch and the problem should disappear. Active Hydroponic Systems

Four parts lava. (Note Because perlite and Styrofoam are lighter than water and will float if this system is fully flooded, neither should be used alone as a medium in this type of system.) A simple flood system can be constructed using a container with a tube attached to its bottom and a one-gallon jug. Fill the container with the medium. Each day pour the water nutrient solution from the jug into the container, holding the tube up high enough that no water drains out. Then let tube down so that the water drains back into the jug. Cannabis And Hydroponics

Growing in hydroponics is not rocket science. It is a simple process which can vary from system to system depending on what kind of a set-up you choose. Most of the nutrient mixes are explained extremely well on the packs. If you follow their instructions and remember that Cannabis only needs 30 -50 strength nutrients then you will do just fine.

Soilless mix

Soilless mix is a combination of several different natural ingredients. These mixes contain a vast assortment of ingredients, but usually contain things like sphagnum moss, Vermiculite and Perlite. Soilless mixes are usually considered organic and have very fine particles that can clog pumps and drip emitters if you don't use a good filtration system. Most soilless mixes retain water well and have great wicking ability while still holding a good amount of air, making them a good growing medium for a variety of hydroponic and organic gardens.

There are many hydroponics systems out there but here are ones that are most commonly used. - Nutrient Film Technique - NFT - Drip Irrigation System - Automatic hydroponics Pots - Manual hydroponics Pots Figure 9.4 - This is a picture of an NFT system. Nutrient Solutions

To avoid problems, change the nutrient solution in the reservoir every week. Change nutrient solution every two weeks in systems with a large reservoir. You may need to change the nutrient solution more often when plants are in the last stages of flowering because they use more nutrients at that time. Plants use so much water that nutrient solutions need to be replenished regularly. Water is used at a much faster rate than nutrients. Casually topping off the reservoir with pH-balanced water will keep the solution relatively balanced for a week or two. Some growers top off the nutrient solution with 500-700 ppm-strength nutrient solution every 2-3 days. Never let the nutrient solution go for more than 4 weeks before draining it and adding fresh solution. Smart growers avoid problems and leach the entire system with weak nutrient solution for an hour or more between changing the reservoir. Check EC of reservoir, growing medium, and runoff nutrient solution at the same time every day....

The best location for a grow room is in an obscure corner of a basement, where the temperature is easy to keep constant year round. Basements are well insulated by concrete walls and soil, A basement room can be enclosed and camouflaged with junk, a double wall, workbench, or shelving. Added security is afforded by installing a false door in a closet. The grow room is located behind the secret door. Another good secret location, except for the possible heat build-up, is the attic. Hydroponic Systems

Passive hydroponic systems rely on capillary action to transfer the nutrient solution passively from the reservoir to the growing medium. The Dutch are masters of passive systems and achieve amazing results. Wick systems have no moving parts. Low initial cost and low maintenance enhance wick systems' popularity. Active hydroponic systems actively move the nutrient solution, which is usually recovered. Cannabis is a fast-growing plant and very well suited to active hydroponic systems. Ebb and flow (flood and drain) hydroponic systems are low maintenance and easy to use. Individual plants in pots or rockwool cubes are set on a special growing bed table that can hold 1-4 inches (3-10 cm) of nutrient solution. Nutrient solution is pumped into the table or growing bed. The rockwool blocks or containers are flooded from the bottom, which pushes the oxygen-poor air out. The Grow Rooms

In order to create a continuous supply of medicine, you need the ever-important Grow Rooms. But don't be intimidated by the word rooms. You won't have to put an addition on your house to grow medical marijuana. Grow Rooms can be practically any self-contained area or space. For a continuous harvest, you'll need three of these rooms because eventually you'll have three crop rotations going simultaneously, each in different stages of growth, each requir- Using a few pieces a scrap lumber, discarded windowframes, ordinary household tools (saw, hammer, ladder), a box of nails, one pound of Crazy Glue, and the plans in this book, you, too, can build in just a few hours with no experience whatsoever a greenhouse that will be the envy of your neighborhood. Hydroponics pH

After you have mixed up your nutrient solution you will want to take a pH reading of it. If you have any problems, just like in soil growing, you will need to adjust your pH level. Now, you do not use the same method to adjust pH levels as described in the soil chapter. For hydroponics you need to buy a pH Up and pH Down adjusting Cannabis plants in a soil system like a pH of 7, but in hydroponics systems they like a pH of 5.2 to 6.3. Soilless Mixes

Soilless mixes are popular, inexpensive, lightweight, inert, and sterile growing mediums. Premixed commercial soilless mixes are an excellent value. They retain moisture and air while allowing good drainage, strong root penetration, and even growth. Fertilizer concentration, moisture level, and pH are very easy to control. With this new information, I set out to try a genetic experiment. I placed 15 different types of female plants in my grow room and crossed them to 2 of the male NYC Diesel's. Each of the males was showing their slightly different phenotypes. One had the internodes closer together with wider leaves, and the other had more stretch to the internodes with thinner leaves.What I did was put both males in the room with the females, and as the pollen flew, the two of them pollinated all the plants.I put the females into a 12-hour cycle one week before I put the males in. This gives the female plants a head start, allowing them to put on a little resin before getting pollinated. Up to the present I have grown many varieties of cannabis, so many that I have completely lost count in fact. So this time I'm not going to heat my grow room during the winter months. I am curious as to how the plants will perform. That they will produce something is certain, but the question remains whether this will result in a massive difference or not. Hydro or hydroponic growing is growing in a water medium with nutrients added to it, or with an automatic irrigation system. Thanks to the greater quantities of oxygen that are brought to the roots as a result, the plant grows at a very fast rate. Much quicker than in soil. But you do have to invest more in your kit if you want to grow hydroponically special pipes, connectors and suchlike need to be bought. Also you have to fully control the pH and EC yourself, so there is less room for mistakes than there is growing in soil. You can rapidly fix things that have gone wrong with your plants, but things can go wrong quickly enough to lose them all too.

Variety is the spice of life

Via this insight we arrive at our next purchase a suction pump with an active carbon filter. Cannabis plants need carbon dioxide (CO2) in order to grow, which they take out of the air around them. If you do not allow fresh supplies of air to the room they are growing in, then sooner or later they are going to use it all up. Once that happens the plant growth is retarded and it will be less healthy. To prevent this happening we make sure that fresh air enters the grow room by putting in an air extractor. This sucks the CO2-depleted air and expels it outside, causing fresh, CO2-laden air to automatically flow into the space. In other words, you do not necessarily need a pump to blow fresh air back into you grow space. You can if you wish, but it is not essential.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is the best measurement of the nutrient concentration of a hydroponic solution. To estimate TDS, one can use a meter that measures the Electric Conductivity (EC) of a solution, and convert the number to TDS in parts per million (PPM). Many meters will do this conversion.

To come back to the issue of light hours. In considering the number of hours that you plan to give your plants each day, you must take good account of the conditions outdoors. Besides the fact that during the night electricity is cheaper to use (for the growers among you who pay for their electricity), there is also the fact that in summer especially, it is easier to keep the temperature in our grow room constant (ideally between 24 and 27 C), than if we let the lamps shine during the day. What To Look For When Buying A Light

Lights that are air-cooled (Figure 5.12) tend to last longer and do not heat up your grow area that much. Most expert growers like to keep a room at a stable controllable temperature and use these air-cooled lights to achieve that. Using flat white paint is one of the simplest, least expensive, most efficient ways to create optimum reflection. Artists' titanium white paint is more expensive, but more reflective. While easy to clean, semi-gloss white is not quite as reflective as flat white. Regardless of the type of white used, a non-toxic, fungus-inhibiting agent should be added when the paint is mixed. The Basics Of Indoor Environment Control

During vegetative growth and flowering, cannabis plants love to get fresh air. Always keep a window open and let your grow room refresh itself every day. The fresher the air the better. Also during the dry periods, in between watering, the roots like to breathe. Fresh air is always the best air. During winter you may want to reduce the time you leave the temperatures for growing cannabis in. The best meter for temperature control is the human body. If you find it is too cold in your grow room then so will your plants. 75 degrees Fahrenheit is what you should aim for. Slightly warmer rooms do help plants to grow a bit quicker. Cutting Down Yeur Plants

Begin by selecting the plants you want to harvest, then chop them down one at a time. Remove the plant from the grow room and then cut the branches into workable sections and place them on your work area. If you are just doing a strip job, that's all the cutting you need to do aside from separating the buds from the branches.

Step Eight Install a Circulation

Air circulation is necessary in all grow rooms, especially during flowering. Usually air circulation must be increased with a circulation fan or fans. Small clip-on oscillating fans come in very handy to circulate air in small grow rooms. They are easy to move and direct air where needed. Or you can mount an inexpensive oscillating fan to the ceiling or buy an actual wall-mounted fan. See the fan size table in Chapter 9 to help you choose the proper circulation fan(s) for your room.

Approximate light production

There are some incandescents which are sold as 'grow lights.' They usually have a blue coating and usually come in 60W and 120W sizes. While they may seem like a good choice to new growers, they are next to useless they produce some light at a usable spectrum, but only have about a 5 efficiency and generate more heat than usable light. Most of us have these in our homes right now. Don't use them for growing instead opt for a Compact Fluorescent as a cheaper but more efficient alternative.
