The Native American Church

In 1891, an anthropologist named James Mooney encountered the followers of Peyote Road. After spending time with its members, Mooney encouraged the group to establish itself as an official religious organization. The followers of Peyote Road were eventually incorporated as the Native American Church (NAC) in Oklahoma City in 1918. The members of this organization used peyote during religious ceremonies to broaden their spirituality and get to know and understand God. They even believed that peyote is the body of Christ, much the way Catholics believe that bread at communion is the body of Christ. As Comanche Chief Quanah Parker stated, The white man goes into his church and talks about Christ the Indian goes into his teepee and talks to Christ.

In this discussion a survey will first be made of the various kinds of psychedelic experiences with an especial examination of the mystical type, and possible reasons for this variety will be mentioned. Then we shall look at some of the evidence that psychedelic mystical experiences occur at all and discuss whether or not they can be considered religious. The LSD churches that have grown out of the evangelistic enthusiasm associated with LSD will also be examined along with their possible impact on individuals and society. Errors in Causal Reasoning

Suppose data revealed that the crime rate in a city rises as the number of churches increases. This association might lead some cynic to hypothesize that churches cause crime. Data may suggest that the churches are built prior to the increases in crime, further supporting the theory. Both the association between cause and effect and the precedence of the cause appear. It comes as little surprise that those who wear their religion on their sleeve have a problem with science. This has been an unfortunate reality from at least the time of Copernicus and Galileo, whose books on celestial observations were placed on the Roman Catholic Church's List of Forbidden Texts. Galileo was actually imprisoned for endorsing Copernicus' theory that the Earth rotated around the Sun. It only took the Church until 1998 to apologize for their treatment of him. In an attempt to maintain some semblance of an independent culture, several religious movements were formed to promote Native American unification and inspire hope for the future. Researchers created a scale of conventionality-unconventionality in an attempt to categorize the personality differences between adolescent drug users and non-users. The basic personality traits of young adolescents were identified prior to their use of any drugs. Current Legal Status Of Peyote And Mescaline

The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970 (also called the Controlled Substances Act) made peyote and mescaline illegal by classifying them as Schedule I controlled substances. Members of the Native American Church regularly use peyote to treat people with alcoholism or other types of drug addiction. They recommend that it be taken every day for a few weeks or months, with hopes that the person will be cured of their addiction. Despite anecdotal reports that peyote can be used to cure someone of alcoholism, scientific research suggests that psychedelic drugs, when given in a hospital or laboratory setting, rarely produce any changes in motivation or attitude that might lead a person to give up drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Mescaline and related alkaloids are found in varying amounts in cacti of the genera Lophophora, Gymnacalycium, Stensonia, Mammillaria, Ariocarpus, Opuntia, Trichocereus, Pelecyphora, and probably others. Members of the Native American Church do quite well with the dried cactus, but extraction of mescaline is desirable since the pure compound seems to produce fewer unpleasant side effects (e.g., nausea). In a process of change akin to Baumeister's crystallization of discontent, Ebaugh (1988) describes the change process as a role exit that includes developing a perception that a current role is not what individuals desired when they began the role. He refers to this as Becoming an Ex. A good example of Ebaugh's role exiting involves nuns who, after taking their vows and entering the church, over time start to see things they strongly disagree with about the institution's policies. As their disenfranchisement builds, their commitment in the face of negative consequences (i.e., disagreement with church policy, defrocking) decreases and as the consequences build, dissonance increases between what they personally value and what their role entails. The point where individuals finally decide to exit a role and become motivated to do something different is seen as a focal point where persons have finally crystallized

In a dark age such as our own, it is difficult to find the true poison path difficult to find the living tradition, difficult to find a living teacher. Several religious groups practice in traditional ways the Native American Church, the Santo Daime in Brazil, and the Uniao do Vegetal,, also in Brazil, are three examples that come to mind. Visit them if you have an opportunity. But otherwise, opportunities are scarce. And going native, except for certain true misfits, is more often a diversion than a way to harmonic power. Thus we seek for roots and models in the Royal Art itself at the fringe of things, even in its heyday. The very origins of the alchemical tradition lie in syncretism Greek religion, Egyptian technology, Jewish Kabbalah. Heterodoxy is its nature, and thus it suits our purposes well.

DMT is actively absorbed, passes the blood-brain barrier, and exerts powerful hallucinogenic effects on the central nervous system.
