The Benefits of CBD

Cannabidiol or CBD is a cannabinoid found in the marijuana plant. The compound comes in many forms including candy, coffee, vapor, and oil. The popularity of CBD has been growing in recent years because of its ability to relieve pain, inflammation, chronic illness, anxiety and other brain disorders, and so much more.

CBD exists with another well-known chemical in cannabis called tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, which is responsible for making people “high”.

All cannabinoids are categorized as Schedule I drugs in the United States and Schedule II in Canada, meaning you will have to jump through several hoops to get your hands on a CBD product.

CBD oil is safe for humans as it does not lead to tolerance or dependence towards the drug. For this reason, the product can be useful for those seeking to get rid of an addiction or avoid addictive drugs.

While the research is still ongoing, so far, the findings show that CBD oil has the following benefits:

  1. Relieve inflammation and chronic pain

CBD oil has come in handy for people suffering from chronic pain as a result of fibromyalgia. It has also been found to be an effective pain reliever and avert the degeneration of the nervous system.

Chronic inflammation can result in tp many non-infectious diseases such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Type I Diabetes as well as an autoimmune disease. Researchers have found that CBD oil can treat inflammation, thus help alleviate the complications that come with it.

  1. Treat epilepsy

CBD oil also has an anti-seizure property that can effectively treat young children with drug-resistant kinds of neurological disorders such as epilepsy.

Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that CBD decreased the frequency of seizures by at least 23 percent than those taking a placebo.

In 2018, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the prescription use of a form of CBD oil called Epidiolex for treating two rare and severe types of epilepsy in patients aged 2 years and above. These two types of epilepsy – Dravet Syndrome (DS) and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) – usually don’t respond to any anti-seizure medications.

Epidiolex is the first FDA-approved drug that features a purified form of a drug extracted from marijuana. The drug has been found to reduce and sometimes stop seizures.

  1. Depression and anxiety

The main use of CBD oil has been treating anxiety and depression. According to a study by Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety affects up to 18 percent of the United States population each year, while depression 6 percent.

It has also been found to reduce anxiety in individuals with anxiety-related disorders such as:

  • General anxiety disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Substance-abuse disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  1. Reduce oxidative stress

When the body produces too many antioxidants and free radicals that it cannot neutralize them all, you will suffer from oxidative stress. This condition has been growing recently due to the rising levels of toxic substances in our environment.

Two recent studies have found that CBD oil has neuroprotective and antioxidant qualities that help reduce neurological damages initiated by free radicals.

  1. Eliminates multi-drug resistant bacteria

According to scientists, all cannabinoids have the ability to fight bacteria, particularly –drug-resistant kinds. A study in 2011 shows that CBD can slow down the development of TB in rats.

  1. Help in the treatment of heart illnesses

Heart disease is among the number one causes of death in the United States and developing countries. Besides a healthy lifestyle and diet, CBD oil can also help in the treatment of heart disease.

A study published in JCI Insight in 2017, scientists discovered that CBD can help combat blood-pressure fluctuations caused by stress. The research found that CBD helps by:

  • Decreasing stress-induced cardiovascular response
  • Decreasing artery blockage
  • Decreasing cholesterol levels
  • Decreasing blood pressure

CBD helps combat oxidative stress as well as inflammation, both of which are precursors to heart ailments.

  1. Help treat Schizophrenia

This mental illness is usually treated using therapy and prescription drugs. However, the drugs used sometimes have side effects on the patient. But CBD oil can reduce hallucinations without any side effects.

CBD oil is a safe, efficient, and well-tolerated treatment of this serious mental illness.

  1. Treat skin conditions

CBD oil has been found to possess a high potential for treating skin conditions such as eczema by encouraging anomalous cell death.

The oil also helps regulate the production of oil in the skin, which reduces acne. Moreover, CBD oil also contains some nutrients such as vitamin E that is essential for the health of the skin.

  1. Fight Type 1 Diabetes

According to research published by Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation, CBD oil has the ability to reduce inflammation in the pancreas.

  1. Fight addiction

CBD oil can also help individuals with addiction to overcome withdrawal symptoms.  In a report published in the Substance Abuse Journal in 2015, CBD oil has a therapeutic effect on individuals with cocaine, opioid, and psycho-stimulant addiction.

The research also found that CBD oil can also help treat people with tobacco and cannabis addiction. Studies have found strong evidence of CBD oil blocking or reducing the effects of THC on the brain.

  1. Fight certain cancer types

CBD oil offers a natural alternative for symptom and pain relief for people fighting cancer.

Although on this front more research needs to be conducted to arrive at a conclusive finding on the role of CBD in treating cancer, the signs so far are promising.
