Table 2. Average amounts, and ranges, of body weights, amounts of tea ingested, and total amounts of alkaloids consumed by fifteen volunteers during the pharmacokinetic phase of the Hoasca Project. These results are presented in terms of kilograms (kg) body weight, milligrams (mg) of alkaloid, and milliliter (ml) of tea ingested.

Of the fifteen volunteers, one was eliminated from the analysis because he vomited early into the session and seven were found to metabolize harmine significantly faster than the remaining seven volunteers (Callaway 2005b). Surprisingly, DMT levels were not significantly affected by this difference in harmine metabolism. It was also noted that the plasma concentrations for THH were not greatly influenced in this regard, suggesting that its metabolism may not be significantly tied to MAO inhibition.

These findings have little bearing on how ayahuasca is actually used, however, as the shaman or mestre is ultimately responsible for the amount to be given. This is a judgment often based on years of experience, the strength of the tea, and some knowledge of the person(s) receiving the tea.
